Alzheimer's disease

The neurodegenerative disease that is Alzheimer's begins many years before visible symptoms can be seen. The destruction of nerve cells is caused by two types of proteins that are deposited in the brain: beta-amyloid in the intercellular spaces and tau protein in the nerve cells. Initially, the deposits interfere with the normal function of the neurons, followed by degeneration and death.
