Alzheimer's disease is one of the so-called primary degenerative dementias of the brain. It is a progressive disorder that cannot be stopped. There are extracellular senile plaques present in the brain of affected individuals (with Aβ peptide deposits and Alzheimer's neurofibrillary degeneration present).
