Basic tests

Once you have established that you are pregnant, you should visit your GP at the clinic where you are registered. Your GP will take an initial general medical history and sign you up for a midwife, who will be the main person to manage your pregnancy. Your first appointment with the midwife is at 12 - 14 weeks' gestation. The first Medical US examination also takes place at this time. At 16 weeks of pregnancy, you will be invited to a second appointment with the midwife. Between 20 - 23 weeks, a second Medical US examination will be carried out. It should be noted here that unless there are additional indications, these will be the only ultrasound examinations. In addition, at 6, 25, 31, 38 and 40 weeks of pregnancy you will be referred for urine tests, blood pressure measurement and measurement of the size of your abdomen. At 28 and 34 weeks, a blood test is due.

You have a choice

In the UK, you can choose to give birth at home or in a special centre run by midwives. This is, of course, only possible if your entire pregnancy has gone well and there are no contraindications. If you are concerned about the language barrier, you are entitled to a free interpreter. In addition, two people may accompany you to the birth. It is therefore worth considering a companion who is fluent in English. Birth by caesarean section is only carried out if it is really necessary.
