Nowadays, many people have problems with dandruff or oily hair. The source can be our health, the environmental conditions as well as the cosmetics we use.

The cause of the formation of dandruff is the presence on the scalp of yeast-like fungi (Pityrosporum Ovale) and bacteria responsible for the proliferation of keratinocytes, i.e. the scaling of the epidermis. Additional causes may be excessive sun exposure, environmental pollution, inadequately used hair care products as well as hormonal and immunological disorders.

Cosmetics are used to treat dandruff in order to reduce or remove the symptoms of excessive exfoliation. They should give the hair an aesthetic appearance, fluffiness, shine and fragrance. Have an antipruritic and antiseptic effect on the scalp.

Depending on the cause of dandruff, shampoos containing:

(a) Antifungal - ketoconazole, zinc pyrithione

b) Keratolytic - contain tar (compounds derived, among others, from wood distillation, used to treat psoriasis), sulphur compounds, salicylic acid, urea.

In the fight against oily hair and dandruff, the right choice of cosmetics, daily hygiene and frequent hair washing are important. The most important thing is not to underestimate the problem. Proper prophylaxis is important to reduce the occurrence of dandruff and seborrhoea. If symptoms flare up, a dermatologist is best placed to advise on what to do in such cases.
