All the time, the majority of women opt for natural childbirth. However, mothers-to-be are concerned about the pain of childbirth. Nowadays, more and more methods of pain relief are available. These are safe not only for the mother-to-be, but also for the baby being born. Obstetric gels are one of the methods increasingly chosen to alleviate labour pain.
Obstetric gels - labour pain relief
Natural childbirth consists of three basic phases. The phase in which strong contractions occur is particularly painful for women, as is the phase in which the baby is born. It is a very traumatic experience for most women. Midwives and gynaecologists make mothers-to-be aware that the pain of childbirth can be greatly reduced by using various techniques.
The phase of birth in which our baby pushes through the birth canal is very painful, as the cervix contracts and stretches. Obstetric gel (available at the pharmacy) helps to reduce this pain. The midwife applies it in the initial phase of labour. It is usually odourless, colourless and can be applied to any woman. It can be used during water births and in conditions after caesarean section.
The purpose of obstetric gel is to reduce the frictional force when the baby pushes through. In this way, pain is minimised and, in addition, the risk of damage to the perineum is reduced. These gels do not contain any fragrances or chemicals and their composition is natural. They are currently recommended in hospitals, in gynaecological surgeries, by midwives and by mothers who have given birth to their babies.
