A foreign body in the nose or ear can pose a serious threat to health or life. How do you deal with a foreign body?

The problem of foreign bodies being placed in the nose or ears mainly affects young children, although sometimes the problem occurs in older children.

Foreign body in the nose

The most common objects inserted include seeds, beads, small toys, blocks, grains or wads of paper. The first signs that "something" is in the child's nose are sudden sneezing, burning, the appearance of bleeding from the nasal cavity and headaches. With each inhalation, the foreign body moves further up the nose, causing redness and severe irritation, which can result in the appearance of pus. If the foreign body is protruding from the nose, it can be removed efficiently with a pencil. However, if you are unable to do so - go to the emergency room. Breathing is equivalent to pulling the foreign body deeper, which in extreme cases can lead to the foreign body entering the trachea or larynx!

Foreign body in the ear

Young children like to put various objects in their ears - pebbles, blocks, pieces of food or even... insects. A foreign body in the ear causes irritation, which can lead to irritability and crying. Unfortunately, it is sometimes difficult to remove the foreign body from the ear yourself - especially if you are dealing with a small, mobile child. It is best to visit an ENT specialist, who will professionally remove the foreign body and verify that there is no significant irritation in the ear canal.
